Managing Site Activations

Each NotedWP license key has a limit on how many sites it can be activated on. This page explains how activations work and how to manage them.

Activation Limits by Tier

  • Pro: 3 site activations.
  • Agency: Unlimited site activations.

Each time you activate your license on a new site, one slot is consumed.

Freeing an Activation Slot

You can free a slot in two ways.

Deactivate from Settings

Go to Noted > Settings > License and click Deactivate License. The slot is released immediately and the site reverts to the free tier.

Deactivate the Plugin

When you deactivate the NotedWP plugin from the WordPress Plugins page, a deactivation request is automatically sent to the license server. The slot is freed without any extra steps.

Hitting the Activation Limit

If you try to activate on a new site and all slots are taken, you will see an “Activation Limit Reached” error. To resolve this, deactivate the license on a site you no longer need, then activate on the new site.

Dev and Staging Domains

NotedWP recognizes common development and staging domain patterns. The following are detected automatically.

  • localhost
  • Domains ending in .test, .local, or .dev
  • Subdomains matching staging. or dev.

These domains are prefixed with dev: when registered with the license server (for example, dev:mysite.local). Your license server may handle these activations differently, such as not counting them toward your slot limit. Check your account portal for specifics.

Managing Your Subscription

Your NotedWP license is managed through LemonSqueezy. To update payment details, change your plan, or view invoices, visit the LemonSqueezy customer portal using the email associated with your purchase.

License Validation

NotedWP validates your license by contacting the update server at updates.notedwp.com. Validation results are cached locally for 12 hours to minimize external requests.

Grace Period

If the update server is temporarily unreachable, NotedWP continues to honor your last known license status. This grace period prevents your features from disappearing due to a brief server outage or network disruption.

Expired Licenses

When your license subscription expires, the following happens.

  • All paid features revert to free-tier behavior.
  • An admin notice appears on every NotedWP admin page informing you that the license has expired.
  • A renew prompt is displayed with a link to the LemonSqueezy portal where you can reactivate your subscription.

Renewing restores your paid features immediately after the next license validation check.
